The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced that Shadab Khan will be the captain for the T20 series against Afghanistan after resting all-format captain Babar Azam.

The series will be played in Sharjah starting on March 24 and before the preparations for the 2024 T20 World Cup, Pakistan has decided to rest its key players Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Mohammad Rizwan.

While PCB has dropped Asif Ali, Haider Ali, Mohammad Hasnain, and, Khushdil Shah from the squad, some new players managed to make it to the squad after their outstanding performance in the PSL. Among them are fast bowlers Ehsanullah and Zaman Khan who have impressed the fans with their fast bowling in this T20 league so far.

Along with them, batsmen Saeem Ayub and Tayyab Tahir have also been selected, and have strengthened the batting line-up of their teams in the PSL.

Meanwhile, Abdullah Shafiq, Azam Khan, Faheem Ashraf, and Imad Wasim have again been included in the squad.

'The decision to quit captaincy will be Babar's own

Najam Sethi, head of PCB's management committee, said during the press conference yesterday that there was concern that senior players have injury problems, they should be rested. In this three-match series, we will rest the seniors and give opportunities to the youngsters.

He said that some media people have started a conspiracy that maybe there is a conspiracy about the captaincy. There is no such situation. I have spoken to all the top players.

I have talked to Babar Azam, Rizwan, Shaheen, Haris, and Fakhar and found that they are all happy. There is no threat to our captain Babar Azam. The day Babar Azam says I have to give up the captaincy, keep it in two (formats) or just keep it in one, then it will be Babar's decision.

Najam Sethi said that I have great respect for Babar. He is our star. I am glad they supported him.

He clarified that the senior players are being rested and the new players are being tested. It is my decision that (in Babar's absence) Shadab will be the captain. It becomes the right.

The head of PCB's management committee said that he has spoken to the officials of the Afghan board that 'what is the guarantee of who will manage your players and crowd, past experiences have not been so good.'

He said that the management of the United Arab Emirates will ensure that the fans of Pakistan and Afghanistan do not sit in the same place. They will be kept separate.

There will be tight security in Sharjah so that no such incident happens. As far as the players are concerned, I have spoken to them (Afghan board) that please understand, losses continue to win. We have a lot of experience of winning and losing. But if you are a newcomer, please take care.

Some are happy and some are angry about Shadab getting the captaincy

Before this announcement by PCB and even now there are comments on social media that senior players including Babar Azam are being rested or they are being dropped and future plans are being planned.

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi congratulated Shadab Khan on becoming the captain on Twitter and said that PCB has taken a good decision by resting the senior players. Young players like Shadab now have this great opportunity. I am happy that he will be able to enjoy himself on the field.

Meanwhile, Shaheen Shah Afridi took to Twitter to share a picture with the Pakistani flag in which he is himself and Babar and Rizwan are standing with him.

Some people have commented that apparently, Shaheen wants to say something without saying anything. According to Zoha, Shaheen wants to say that 'we are one under the shadow of this flag', while Ibn Rafi says that it is a secret message.

But Kinza says that Shaheen only meant that 'the three of us are resting'. Arsalan says that Shaheen wants to say that Shaheen Shah Afridi has told him that all boys are one and will remain the same.

Earlier, former PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja also expressed his views on social media in which he thought that the atmosphere will be spoiled by pitting key players against each other in the captaincy race.

He also mentioned that "If Shadab, Shaheen, and Babar are pitted against each other about the captaincy issue, not only will the atmosphere be affected, but also the performance of the test under Babar's leadership will deteriorate."

He also said that 'Please learn from history because this is how Pakistani cricket was destroyed in the 90s.'

On this, user Arfa Feroze commented that "Shaheen is standing firm with Babar and Rizwan and there is a clear message within the PCB and to the Babar mafia that 'thinking is also prohibited'."

Many users thought that Babar should have remained the captain. As Afarah says, "He should remain the captain in all formats till the World Cup." The real dispute is about T20.

However, Samra said, "I will still support the team if Shadab is the captain in Babar's absence." Other players are also our players.

Journalist Shoaib Jutt quipped that 'some time ago it was said that the Roti gang was broken up and was not allowed to fit into the team again. Now the bread gang is making a comeback. If you can stop it, stop it.

Yesterday in a Sama News show, when Shahid Afridi was asked if there is any truth that he is 'lobbying for Shaheen's captaincy', he replied with a laugh that it 'has nothing to do with the Cricket Board. I was forbidding Shaheen to be the captain in the PSL as well.

Meanwhile, a user named Kashf says that Shaheen is a bigger player than the campaign against him and Babar has made the team a unit. "Hopefully it stays that way."

In his press conference, Najam Sethi said in response to a question that he had "no discussion" with Shaheen about the captaincy. I must have discussed what the strategy should be. It was agreed upon.

He said that speculations had started. I was watching and feeling sad that people are talking about where Babar will sit.
