PTA warns of blocking Wikipedia for not removing offensive content

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a warning to block the website, downgrading Wikipedia services in the country for not blocking offensive and illegal content.

The restoration of the services of Wikipedia will be reconsidered subject to blocking / removal of the reported unlawful contents. PTA is committed to ensuring a safe #online experience for all #Pakistani citizens according to local laws.

According to a statement issued by the PTA, Wikipedia was contacted to block or remove the said content by issuing a notice under applicable law and court orders.

According to the PTA, an opportunity for a hearing was also provided, but Wikipedia neither complied with the order to remove the offending content nor appeared before the authority, showing willful non-compliance with the PTA's instructions. Wikipedia's services have been downgraded for 48 hours and the reported content has been blocked.
