Ramadhan Moon Late Night Announcement: What Science Analysis About Moon Birth

On Wednesday night in Pakistan, when most of the people, including me, were busy preparing for sleep by planning breakfast instead of Sehri, suddenly the mobile screens were flooded with messages of Ramadan Ka Chand Mubarak, which was a surprise to many people.

Be it the start of Ramadan in Pakistan or the joy of the Eid festival, the majority of the country remains in a state of limbo until the Moon Sighting Committee announces the sighting.

And the same thing came to the fore on Wednesday night when after a five-hour long meeting of the Sighting of the Crescent Committee, it was announced after 10 pm that the Ramadan moon had been sighted in Pakistan and the first fast would be on Thursday.

With this announcement, where many people worried about the preparation of Suhoor, many went to mosques to recite taraweeh late at night and along with this, users on social media asked questions about the issue of moonrise at 10 pm.

A Twitter user slammed the committee for announcing the moon for the first fast and wrote that "if the committee had waited a little longer, the sun would have appeared."

A user named Rabail Siddiqui also described Chand's 'sudden' announcement as beyond comprehension.

He wrote, "First they kept saying that the first fast will be on March 24, then suddenly the moon appeared." The matter was not understood.

Whenever the Islamic calendar has to start in Pakistan, the committee appointed for it starts the work of searching for the new moon with the setting of the sun, and usually its decision comes out within a few hours, but during the month of Ramadan and Eid. On the occasion, the same moon is often not found even by searching and then this is what happened this time with the moon of Ramadan.

What does science say about the 'birth' of the moon?

In the context of the question raised by users with the mixed trend on social media, we spoke to Chief Meteorologist Dr. Sardar Sarfaraz and asked him what is the time of appearance of the last crescent (first date moon) and it is How long is visible in the sky?

According to Dr. Sarfaraz, the earth and the sun are moving around their respective orbits, but at the end of every month they come in a line which is called 'conjunction' and this is the time when the moon is born.

The moon of this month of Ramadan was born on Tuesday night at 10:23 PM. The moon was more than 20 hours old at sunset on Wednesday. In the Jiwani area of Balochistan, the age of this moon was around 21 hours, which is an indication of a very clear possibility of seeing the moon.

According to Dr. Sarfaraz, the duration of Pehali's moon is slightly different in every month, but in March and April, the moon can be seen for about 40 minutes.

If we talk about the moon of Ramadan on Wednesday, the moon was in the sky for more than 40 minutes after sunset. In the Jiwani area of Balochistan, the sunset at 7:59, after which it could be seen in the sky for 40 minutes, which was the longest period in the country.

According to Dr. Sarfaraz, the third thing besides the birth of the moon and its age is the angle of the moon. "On Wednesday night, the angle of the moon of the month of Ramadan was about eight degrees, which was possible to see with the human eye."

He also said that the information was cloudy in many areas the previous day and after that, the announcement of the committee came out only after the investigation of the testimonies received from other areas including Bahawalpur and Mardan.

It should be noted that the Meteorological Department's data processing center prepares the moon sighting calendar every year and it is also a fact that a representative of the Meteorological Department is included in the Moon Sighting Committee.

According to the authorities, 'Ravit Hilal Committee uses the instruments of the Meteorological Department to observe the moon and according to the forecast of the department and keeping in view the movement of the moon, the telescope is installed at the angles from which the moon is easily seen at a certain latitude or horizon. can be seen.'

According to science, you can easily see the new moon after 16 to 18 hours of birth.

According to the officials of the Meteorological Department, "Science has advanced so much that the period of the moon's full year's rotation is already known and also how long and to what extent the moon can be seen in a particular area."

According to the researchers, low-latitude areas such as the coastal areas from Karachi to Pasni Gwadar are more likely to see the moon for longer periods, while the northern areas are less likely to see it.
